Why is Prepaid Growing during the Pandemic?
Quarter 2 of 2020 led to growth for AT&T's, T-Mobile's, and Verizon's Prepaid divisions.
According to a report by Wave 7 Research, AT&T grew 165,000 net prepaid subscribers, followed by T-Mobile with 133,000 and then Verizon with 12,000.
It has been a difficult time for everyone. The media keeps reporting overall low company earnings and goals not being reached.
So, why was Q2 of 2020 a period of growth for PREPAID?
There are several explanations as to why carriers saw their prepaid subscriber counts grow, but one major reason is that the pandemic has led to job losses. Consequently, many wireless subscribers looked for ways to cut costs, and prepaid is a good way for them to do that.
Many MVNO's have also created, for a limited time, $15/mo plans that offer unlimited talk/text and a decent amount of data. This creates another incentive for wireless users to shop around for a better (and more affordable) plan.
